Father/Daughter Dance – 3/31/2012

Navesink Country Club in Rumson, once again put on a great party.  This time the theme was a Father/Daughter Sock-Hop themed dance for it’s members.

With the Dads in Suits and the girls in Poodle Skirts we kicked off the party to some top 40 kid’s favorites.  We played a ton of games and audience participation dances, and the girls all got to participate in the Hula Hoop and dance contests to try and win some prizes.

The dads were also treated to watching two NCAA Final Four games:

Kentucky (69) vs Louisville (61)

Kansas (64) vs Ohio St. (62)

In all everyone had a great time at a very special dance.

Spring Fling Party @ Cliffwood Elementary School – 3/23/2012

The PTO headed by Dawn, put on a great “Spring” themed party for kids and families at Cliffwood Elementary School.  It was a great turn out on a Friday evening and the kids definitely came ready to party and dance.

We played all the popular Audience Participation and Line Dance songs including, “Cha-Cha Slide“, “Cupid Shuffle”, “Electric Slide”, “Cotton-eyed Joe”, “Macarena”, “Hands-Up”, “Dollar-Wine”, “Hot-Hot-Hot”, and “Apache”.  The kids loved the hats, sunglasses, Hawaiian leis, and maracas we gave out.  We also played lots of new music LMFAO, Rihanna, Drake, One Republic, Pitbull, Flo Rida, Black Eyed Peas, Avicii, Calvin Harris, and Adele.

We finished off the night with some group pictures of all the students up on stage to go in the year book.  It was a really fun and energetic night.

“Think Big” – Bill Kubeck’s 50th @ Trump Golf Club – 3/17/2012

“I like thinking big. If you’re going to be thinking anything, you might as well think big.” - Donald Trump

Bill Kubeck’s surprise 50th Birthday Party certainly lived up to Donald Trump’s words.  Not only was his party at Trumps Golf Course in Colt’s Neck, NJ, but it was on St. Patrick’s Day, and there was an Elite Entertainment Disc Jockey (Yours Truly) and The Two River Band (T.J., James, Mike, & Will).  Donna, Bill’s wife who planned the surprise party was definitely “Thinking BIG”!

The party started off with the Cocktail Hour where guests were treated to green beer (in honor of St. Paddy’s Day) and champagne.  Once our guest of honor arrived – walking in to a thunderous “SURPRISE!!” and greeted and thanked his guests, everyone made there way into the main banquet room where The Two River Band kicked off there opening set.

Throughout the night we traded sets between DJ dance sets and Band sets, each lasting about an hour a piece.  Some of the special highlights were Bill & Donna dancing to there wedding song and Donna and their son giving a special thank you to the guests and congratulations to Bill.

In all it was a great night, with lots of dancing, singing, eating, drinking and especially “BIG” fun, and helped make a very memorable party for Bill as well as all the guests including myself.

Thank you to Donna, T.J., James, Mike, Will, and the staff of Trump Golf Course for an amazing night, and Congratulations once again to Bill on his 50th.

What Song was That?? – Heather’s Graduation Party – 3/4/2012

I received an email:

“From: Christina Young

Date: Tue, Mar 13, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Subject: Question

Good Morning,

You Deejayed my cousin (Heather Young)’s graduation party on Sunday,
March 4th.  There was a song that you played, introduced by saying it
was from 1996 – my fiance and I loved that song, but couldn’t remember
the name of it after we left the party!!!

We thought it was the Boricua Anthem, but it doesn’t sound right.  I’m
sure you DJ a ton of parties all weekend long but I was hoping you
might be able to help me out if you recalled the name of this
particular song for us.  We wanted to have it played at our upcoming
wedding.

Thanks in advance.

Christina Young”

Christina was correct, it was the song was “Robi-Rob’s Boriqua Anthem ’96 Remix” by Robi Rob’s Clubworld.  (I emailed her back)

I love getting emails like this where someone asks about a song I played, especially one that I don’t play that often. Heather graduated from Centenary College, and her Party at Flynn’s – Philipsburg, NJ (Last exit in NJ) was a great time. We played a big variety of music: Latin, Top 40, some oldies… plus a few 90’s Club Hits.

One of the funniest things was when the Guest of Honor from the party next door (1st Birthday Party), came dancing in the room… She was adorable…Everyone in our party clapped and cheered for her (Her Parents were embarrassed).

In all it was a great party, lots of dancing, lots of fun….Congrats Heather on your Graduation, as well as Christina on your Wedding.

Seeing Double – “1 X 1 = 2”

Day 1:

Twins was the name of the game for Rachel & Rebecca’s Sweet 16 on 2/10/2012 @ Alfonso’s in Somerville.  The one thing (amongst probably many other things) that they shared was how sweet and generally kind hearted they are.  You could tell by the way their friends and family acted around them that they both are very special young ladies.  We kicked off the party to a packed dance floor, and started off with the crowd favorites: “Sexy and I Know It” – LMFAO, “We Found Love” – Rihanna feat. Calvin Harris, “Good Feeling” – Flo Rida.  Throughout the night we mixed in Top 40, Hip-Hop, and Latin.

What their guests found out was that it was not only a double birthday for the Twins, but a triple birthday since Rachel & Rebecca’s mom Vivian was also celebrating her 50th with her own cake and candles…

We also were treated by Rachel and her Musical Theater group to a show.  They performed  “2X” to “Single Ladies” – Beyonce and “Party Rock Anthem” – LMFAO.

We put the Twins in the middle of a circle of all their friends “2 X” having them dance to “Dance (A$$)” – Big Sean and “Baby Got Back” – Sir-Mix-A lot.  The decorations, giveaways, as well as lighting package added to an already fun night, and helped make this party a one of kind (not just due to the fact it was for Twins).

Thanks Rachel, Rebecca, Vivian, and the staff at Alfonso’s!  I had a lot of fun, and it was a great way to kick-off a “2X” DJ weekend.

Day 2:

We switched gears somewhat for Jennifer’s 40th Birthday Party @ The Middlesex Fire House on 2/11/2012.  Once again the decorations were amazing, transforming the room into a fun party atmosphere with candles, balloons, lighting, an amazing cake, and my favorite a life size Jen cut-out which I found out someone had put on her lawn that morning…

As guests arrived they were treated to wine, beer, hors d’oeuvresand a fountain flowing with a vodka punch.  After Happy Hour we kicked off the party with some fun new music, “Sexy Chick” – David Guetta feat Akon, “Sexy and I Know It” – LMFAO,  and “Moves Like Jagger” – Maroon 5.  We partied up until Dinner, then had a mini Jennifer Roast (Comedic roast not the food kind) – Jen’s brothers, Sister, and some good friends came up and shared some really nice, and really funny (interpreted hilarious) stories about Jennifer.

We kicked off the second half of the party to some Freestyle, 80’s & 90’s Club, Classic Rock, and Old School Hip-Hop. Some time during the night we found out about Whitney Houston, so we dedicated two party songs, “It’s Not Right (But It’s Okay)” and “I’m Every Woman” to her.  We partied into the A.M. and ended the night with a ton of sing-along’s including, Journey, Meatloaf, The Beatles, Abba, and others.  It was a great way to end off the weekend.  Thanks Jennifer and family/friends for a fun evening and fun antics throughout the night.

Friday, February 3, 2012 – Eatontown Memorial Middle School Dance

“Music in Schools”

It occurred to me about 30 minutes into the Eatontown, Memorial Middle School Dance, why music is so important to have in school’s curriculum. Laughingly, one of the awesome teachers there said “You ask the kids the times tables and get a blank stare, but then they know all the dances to all the songs.”  It was a funny comment while the kids were all doing the “Dougie”, but It made me think that I was exactly the same way (minus the times table part, I was pretty good in math) – we all knew all the dances and all the songs.  It was the one thing that all the kids in my elementary/middle/high school had in common. Regardless of race, gender, background, if someone was singing/rapping a song that everyone liked and knew, you would have 20 people chiming in on the chorus.

I remember a bus trip out to Amish country in PA, where we were all singing “Ladi Dadi” by Slick Rick  - 30 kids on a school bus… must have drove our teachers and parents nuts…. But music kept us together… The same thing holds true 20-30 years later… At this dance, I played “We Found Love” – Rihanna ft Calvin Harris, and all the girls are singing together and dancing, regardless of once again race, gender, or background.  I played “Sexy and I Know It” by LMFAO to the same affect – boys and girls together singing & dancing.  The kids on this night had a great time, and I really thought that music in schools is such a big part of kids understanding each other, experiencing different cultures, backgrounds, and era. When the same teacher asked me to play “Apache” by The Sugar Hill Gang and dedicate it to a student, I thought, I was dancing to this song at my School Dance…… and the effect was exactly the same…. A room full of kids doing the dance…..

When you reflect back to school you may not remember verbatim learning your spelling words, or parts of history or science, but if you were in a music class, you probably remember the songs word for word you sang back then.  Songs that helped shape who you are, songs that if you put a room full of adults from the same school together, they could probably sing it in unison, just like they did in School…

Thanks to Miss Krsyzckowski and Miss Collins for a great time, and all the kids who made it to the dance at Memorial Middle… Thanks for bringing back some warm memories, and some songs in my head from the past… I enjoyed partying with you and look forward to doing it again.

Saturday, January 21, 2012 – Oyster Creek Generating Station Party, Dolce Seaview Resort in Galloway Township, NJ.

I was a little nervous while driving down to the Seaview Resort, since we had a good amount of snow/sleet, I was hoping it would not hinder the employees/guests from Oyster Creek from heading to the holiday party.  Once I was set up and the guests started to arrive for cocktail hour, I saw my worries were all for not.  We had a good size crowd of about 225+ guests, and they came ready to party!

After cocktail hour a few slow dances and dinner, we kicked off the night in a fun way.  I started by inviting employees up to the center of the dance floor based on tenure with the Oyster Creek – 30 years, 25 years and so on down to 5 years and then finally everyone.

So at that point all the employees were on the dance floor together, we had people taking pictures giving hugs, it was great.  Then we invited all of the non-employees (Guests +1) to make a big circle around the employees.  Once everyone was in place I had them introduce themselves, shake hands, give a hug, whatever they wanted to the people on the left and right of them.  At this point everyone in the room is on the dance floor so I kicked off the party to “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO.  We played through a heavy party set which included “Moves Like Jagger” by Maroon 5, “We Found Love”  by Rihanna & Calvin Harris, “Sexy and I Know It” by LMFAO, “Yeah 3X” by Chris Brown and “You Make Me Feel” by Cobra Starship.

The party continued with a great dance floor fueled by many classic requests like “Living on a Prayer”, “I Will Survive”, “Burning Down the House”, and “Respect”.  The guests danced to a few partnered dances with Salsa, Swing, The Hustle, and The Cha-Cha.  We also had some Audience Participation dances with the Cha-Cha Slide, Cupid Shuffle, The Electric Slide (done to “Bad Romance”), and a huge Conga Line (complete with maracas, leis, and sunglasses).

After all this partying, the guests needed a quick break, which is when Marita (Host) and Russell (Management) raffled off a few nice door prices, as well as picked the winners of the Company 50/50 (proceeds went to a cancer treatment charity).  We then got the party moving again filling the dance floor with some more new music, a Disco set, a 90’s Hip-Hot Set, and the finale to “The Time (Dirty Bit)” by Black Eyed Peas.  The Guests were excited to find out the party was not stopping here but that the Management at Oyster Creek had arraigned for Shuttles to take them the 8 miles to Atlantic City, and much later back to the Seaview where most of them were staying.

It was a great party, the guests were so much fun.  Thanks to Marita, Russell, and John from the Oyster Creek for hosting the party and having me DJ.  Thanks to Anna from the party for being my dance partner all night.  Thanks to the staff at the Seaview for the great food and being so accommodating.  I can’t wait to work with you all again!

Saturday, January 7, 2012 – Jodie’s Sweet 16 @ The Palace in Somerset Park

What a gorgeous January day for a party at the Palace, 60 degrees and a room full of Jodie’s family and friends waiting to party.   We were in the upstairs Gatsby Room, and the up-lighting combined with the decorations made the room look great. The party was big mix of family and Jodie’s friends from school.  The guests were welcomed with Shirley Temples, Pina Caldas (non-alcoholic), and Strawberry Daiquiris (non-alcoholic).

Once cocktail hour was completed, it was time for Jodie’s grand entrance.  I gathered all the guests into a half circle, got their hands clapping, and played  “Throw Your Hands Up” by Quinto Ft. Pit Bull & Lorenzo – Jodie came in dressed in a beautiful silver dress complimented with a tiara, the whole time dancing and giving hugs and high fives to her guests.  Jodie and her father went straight into the father/daughter dance to “My Girl” by the Temptations.  Afterwards we moved everyone into the main dining room for a blessing by Rev. Cadet followed by the buffet.

After the guests were finished eating, we kicked the party off by inviting Jodie to the center of the dance floor (which was filled with Pink and White Balloons) and getting all her guests to make a circle around her. Once everyone was out there we had everyone clapping and cheering for her and threw on “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO, turned on the Lighting effects, and turned the Volume Up!!!.. Jodie was in the middle of her guests dancing and I asked her to start grabbing one person at a time to join her in the middle, then I asked each person she grabbed to also grab one person to join her in the middle… within less than 2 minutes every person in the room was on the dance floor partying….We kept the party moving dancing to songs such as: “We found Love”-Rihanna ft Calvin Harris, “Sexy and I Know It”-LMFAO, “Run the World”-Beyonce, “Teach Me How to Dougie”-California Swag District, “Without You”- David Guetta & Usher.

After about an hour of dancing it was time for the Candle Lighting and dessert.  One of the highlights was Jodie inviting her entire Swim Team up and them doing their Swim Team Cheer…. We kept partying while the guests were eating dessert, some of the requests from the guests were: “Levels”-Avicii, “Motto”-Drake, “Yes”-LMFAO, “6ft,7ft”-Lil Wayne, “Cat Daddy”-Rej3ctz, & Bachata.  We threw on an Old School Hip-Hop Set with “Let Me Clear My Throat”-DJ Kool, “Be Faithful”-Fat Man Scoop, “Jump Around”-House of Pain, “Poison” –Bell Biv Devoe, and “Baby Got Back”-Sir Mix A lot.

We ended the night by gathering all the guests in a circle with Jodie in the middle, making a few Thank You mentions to her family, friends, and the staff at The Palace, then throwing on “Super Bass”-Nicki Minaj… Jodie danced her last song of the night with her guests as happy as could be….

It was a great night, as much fun for me as for the guests… Thanks to the Thompson Family, as well as the Maitre’D and staff at The Palace…
