Anna & Brian 4/28/13 – A Magical Night…

I am very happy every time I see that I will be working at The Palace in Somerset, my favorite place to work. Anna and Brian had a cool idea for introductions. It was a movie theme so the parents came out to the Star Wars theme, Wedding Party came out to the Indiana Jones theme, and then Anna and Brian came down the beautiful staircase to 2001 Space odyssey theme song. As soon as they hit the dance floor they wanted us to play Thunderstruck by ACDC as they walked through the arch.
Anna and Brian had Elite Video Productions to capture all the great moments and also had a PhotoBooth by Elite which is always a big hit. Fun party and great people. Anna picked out every song and her music list was perfect.  We started with a traditional Italian dance set and that broke the ice and set the party up for the rest of the night.  Another amazing night. Anna and Brian posted a very nice review on WeddingWire a week later saying that I provided her with a magical night.   Another big reason why I love this job.

Kate & Mike 4/27/13 – “DJ’s Of The Year!”

Myself and Craig had an amazing time with this group. The wedding was at a place called The Stateroom in Ship Bottom which is a very cool place in LBI.
Cool vibe and the staff was great.  The staff at The Stateroom and the bride and groom, Kate and Mike, wanted to have all the courses and dinner out and done before we even opened up the dance floor which means we had a full 2 hours to dance straight through till the end. So we hit them with everything we had and wow did they dance! Not one slow song (bride and grooms request) and 99 percent of Kate and Mike’s guests were on the dance floor.  At one point we played Party Rock Anthem, Sexy and I Know It, Gangnam Style and then the Harlem Shake (all which were Kate’s requests) all in a row and the people lost their minds. The sweat that came off the guests dancing was pretty funny.
At the end of the night we handed out a ton of cards and the staff at the State Room took a bunch of cards too. It felt great when the staff said that was the best time we ever had working at a wedding. One waiter came up to us and said “wow, best DJ’s of the year!!”   About a week later Katie and Mike posted an awesome review on us on WeddingWire.

Different Strokes for Different Folks

Normally my blogs are on the great weddings that I’ve had the absolute honor and privilege of entertaining at, but in this case, I’ve decided to expand a little further onto the spectrum of celebrations, to a 25th wedding anniversary. On Saturday, April 27th, I was able to help Jamie Okozko surprise her parents, Joanne and Lester, at the Galloping Hill Caterer’s Club, in Union. I had previously entertained at their friend’s 25th wedding anniversary back in September, and was looking forward to matching the high level of success from that party. I thought this would be a tall order, but because of the wide range of music requested, I catered to the “Different Strokes for Different Folks”, and this group was absolutely amazing. Jamie originally gave me a list of Top 40, Classic Rock, Oldies and Country. I was instructed to play country during dinner, and stick to the rest of the playlist the rest of the night. Let me say, Jamie knew what she was talking about when she said this. People were clapping to the beat as they rocked out to songs like “Toes” and “Chicken Fried” by Zac Brown Band as they enjoyed their meal. But once dinner was done, we got the party rolling hitting Classic Rock and Top 40 songs like “Shook Me All Night Long” by ACDC and “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO. After a short break in the action, the Swing and Lindy crowd made there presence known with classic hits like “In the Mood” by Glenn Miller Band. Not to be outdone, the Motown fans wanted some of the classics, like “Respect” by Aretha Franklin, “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor and “We are Family” by Sister Sledge. I can go on and on with various requests that ran the musical gamut from hip hop, to big band and electronic dance music, but words truly cannot do the guests at this party justice. Everyone walked away satisfied and with a smile on their faces, and it was my pleasure to oblige. Behind all of this was the love shown between these two people who have found 25 years of marriage, and will undoubtedly find another 25 just as wonderful! Congratulations to Lester and Joanne Okozko!

4/19/13 – Keep the place standing!

I worked Kim and Scotts wedding at McLoone’s Pier House in Long Branch and Mike Walter, my “boss”, worked there the next day. The Thursday before he told me to keep the place standing so I did the best I could.  We had such a blast partying with Kim and Scott. There is nothing better than working a wedding when it’s your referral because everybody knows what to expect… a slammin party from me (haha).  Everyone danced from start to finish. Instead of the traditional sit down dinner, Kim and Scott wanted McLoone’s to set up cocktail stations around the room to keep open all night. This way people can eat when they want and dance when they want. No sitting down. We kept it upbeat most of the time with only a couple slow songs. The music Kim and Scott wanted was great. They loved the 80′s sing a long stuff and wanted a ton of old school club and hip hop. A bunch of people came up to us at the end of the night to grab business cards from us, so I hope to party with this group again soon.  So, Mike Walter, I think I kept the place standing for ya.

Jessica & Tristan – April 6. 2013

Small group in a big room. We were in the big room (Janine’s room) at the Crystal Point in Point Pleasant.  As always the wedding was perfect with Jeanine running the show and the staff doing an amazing job. It was a smaller wedding with a huge dance floor which sometimes can be a challenge, but not with this group. Jessica and Tristan’s guests were ready to party. Right from the start, before the party began, only the wedding party were hanging out in the room. We did a sound check and my assistant Rob Habermann played a TLC song.  Next thing you know, the members of the wedding party were dancing around and acting wild. That is always a great sign of a good party. That’s exactly what happened. The dance floor was packed all night with a huge mix of music. If there is one thing I know from doing this so many years is that if you have a Bride and Groom, along with their  wedding party, dancing all night, all the guests will join in on the fun.

Christina & Eddie 2-16-13

What a awesome night at one of our favorite places to work.  The Rosewood in Edison is always a great place with very good food and a friendly staff.
From beginning to end what a great wedding for Christina and Eddie.  Not only was Elite Entertainment there ready to party we also had Davide Fuoco from Elite Photo Booths there with all his energy and enthusiasm to add to the party. As a matter of fact when we played Cotton Eyed Joe he jumped on the dance floor to help show the dance (since I know it’s one of his favorite songs to dance to.)   On top of that we had the pleasure of working with John from Galis Photography, one of the nicest guys in the business.
The entire night was a blast. Myself and Rob Haberman rocked the crowd and danced non stop.  There were only children in the wedding party which made it a lot of fun when we introduced them to Party Rock Anthem as they danced into the room.  Thanks again to Christina & Eddie for a night full of fun and dancing.

Every party is a party, though every party isn’t a wedding!

On February 1, 2013 i had the pleasure of DJing a Valentine’s / Mother-son dance at the Betty McElmon elementary school.

Having done the party previously I knew exactly what to expect, rambunctious boys with tons of energy!  We played Coke & Pepsi, Limbo and freeze dance!  In between the games we danced to a few pop songs and engaged in a Gangnam Style dance duel! We also danced to the Electric slide during which i had the boys invite their guest (mom, aunt, or caretaker) to join them on the dance floor.
After interspersing a few more of the audience/line dance songs (Cupid Shuffle etc.), I had the boys line up on one side of the dance floor with their guest opposite them. The boys were given a flower to present to the women and I played a slow song for them to dance to.
Boys being boys, they wanted more upbeat songs! Back to the pop music and breakdancing for a few minutes we went, until i announced the end of the evening!

Nina & James – January 4th, 2013 at the Versailles Ballroom

Here’s the story of Nina (now Thompson) and her husband James!

IMG_0879-EditWow! What a way to begin the new year!  It was January 4th 2013 Nina and her fiancé James arrived at the Versailles Ballroom (of The Ramada in Toms River) overjoyed to be getting married.  And how could they not be? They had Elite Video, Elite Digital Images and Yours Truly as their Elite Entertainer on the scene to create new memories!  Adding to the fun was an Elite Photobooth (and Elite’s purple uplighting surrounded the room).
To open the festivities I played “Don’t Stop The Party” by Pitbull as their recessional (to end the ceremony)! The bridal party and guests danced their way into cocktail hour!
Being a younger crowd, the parents and bridal party then were introduced into their reception to “Let’s Go” by Calvin Harris ft. Ne-Yo! After which i quieted the crowd and dropped “We Found Love” by Rihanna for Nina & James!  Of course the bridal party was into it so we let the song play and they all danced, half filling the floor for a few minutes more!
The first dance (“I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz) and parent dances (“I Loved Her First” by Heartland, and “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts) went wonderfully.
IMG_1022Soon it was party time and the dance floor was packed! There were a few audience songs (Cupid Shuffle and the Wobble), but mostly it was dance/pop music with not much in the way of oldies! There was some latin music as well, “Que Precio Tiene El Cielo” by Marc Anthony (salsa) and “Suavemente” by Elvis Crespo (merengue).
We had to take a little break from dancing so that James could try to shove cake into Nina’s face! There was a jump fest for the bouquet! James did a mock strip tease for the garter and then tossed it to the boys! The garter made its way up another young lady’s leg before it was party time again!
Nina and James, along with family and friends, partied the rest of the night away before they had to say good night and good bye (due to James’ enlistment and subsequent assignment on the west coast)!

The Mill & Elite give back…

On October 29, 2012 the tristate area was absolutely devastated by hurricane Sandy.  This will forever be remembered for the destruction it brought to our beloved Jersey Shore and the many families who are left without homes, with a long road ahead to recovery.  It can be hard to find the good in something so bad, but here it was so easy to see.  Communities across the state came together in every possible way to help their neighbors in this extremely difficult time.  Donald, from The Mill in Spring Lake is one of those citizens doing everything he can.  He runs operations at the Mill, a popular venue for weddings and other parties.  Donald had a Saturday night on December 1 that was open and he decided to make use of the night in the best way possible.  He gathered up volunteers from all over and put together a night to remember for all of those that have lost their homes from the storm.  He was able to get approximately 15 volunteers to help set tables, serve food, and clean up at the end of the night.  He had several employees that stayed to work double shifts, but working that second shift on their own time to help out as well.  In the end, he also had over 240 guests that would be showing up to party and, if just for four hours, forget about the tragic events of the storm.  The last piece of the puzzle was of course the entertainment.  Donald decided to make a call to Mike, owner of Elite Entertainment, and ask if he had anyone willing and available to donate their time for the party.  When Mike made the announcement, I jumped at the opportunity to do what I can to make this party happen.

The night of the party I showed up about an hour and a half early to get setup and get an idea of how the night will go.  It was then I learned just how much Donald had in store for the guests of this beautiful holiday party.  First, they had over 60 prizes to give away in a Chinese auction which they handed out five tickets per guest to spread out as they wished among the gifts.  Included was everything from scarfs, blankets, and pillows to lamps, dishes, and jewelery.  All a great start to get people started on replenishing what they lost.  On top of all those prizes, there were also many more gifts for children that were being given away as well.  But instead of a Chinese auction, this was much more exciting for the children.  I was instructed to put on the song “Santa Claus is Coming To Town” and get the crowd amped up for the arrival of the big man in red.  Santa himself showed up and all the children in the room had a chance to sit on his lap to tell him what they wanted for Christmas and then also walk away with a gift right then.  It was an amazing site to see the smiles on the kids faces as they got to see some real Christmas magic that night.

While all the gifts were great, we still had plenty of entertainment for the guests to enjoy as well.  Besides have me DJ the party, there were also five live performances spread throughout dinner time.  The live portion of the show was kicked off by a girl named Rachel who was performing in public for just the second time.  Listening to her sing and play guitar you would think she had been doing this for years.  She performed a song she had written herself about the storm and sounded fantastic, the crowd agreed.  Following Rachel was her friend Emily who took over the guitar and sang just as beautifully as her friend, again pleasing the crowd, bringing absolute joy to everyone in the room.  The next two performances were from Jennifer and Michael who gave me background music to play for each of them and sang Broadway style songs.  Both of which again had just incredible voices along with some nice dancing during breaks to really make them a joy to watch.

For the last performance, Jennifer and Michael teamed up to do a duet of “Rockin Around the Christmas Tree“.  This was a very upbeat number and I knew would be a great way to team up with Jen and Mike to open the dance floor in a very different way then your standard party.  I had them start inviting people up throughout their performance and then kicked the party right into gear with “Runaround Sue“.  No one hesitated to get up and dance the rest of the night away as I took them through the decades from the 50′s up to the 80′s.  I also broke up fast paced high energy dance sets with a couple beautiful slow dances for the lovely couples.

In the end this will always be a night that everyone in the room, especially me, will never forget.  It felt absolutely amazing to be able to donate my time to such a worthy cause and to be able to make so many people, over 240, so happy for that four hours after all they had been through.  While I know this was simply one night to help forget about what has happened, I know the power of fun and laughter when going through such a tough time.  And when you combine all the talents and volunteers that we had that night, all gathered for the sole purpose of being happy without the distractions of business and how much this and that costs, you are guaranteed to have a great night that will never be forgotten.

Why I loved DJing this Event……

  • This was my first wedding after the storm (others had been postponed), so I was eager to help people have a good time and forget at least for a few hours about the issues everyone was having.
  • Brooke & Chris had to change venues due to flooding in their original Banquet Hall, but they were able to keep the date, notify all their guests, and make the Wedding a success.
  • All the guests were ready to have fun, and showed up ready to eat, drink, dance, and be merry.
  • As the pictures show, Brooke & Chris personalized the Banquet room, with pictures, plaques, and other great decorations to bring the room to life for their Wedding.
  • The dance floor stayed packed all night and everyone enjoyed themselves to the fullest.
